The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
