Substantial Online Disruption Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web failure has impacted numerous websites and mobile apps globally, as users noting troubles connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s web hosting platform.

The disrupted apps encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-managed services like its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users turned to networks to report their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of problems on specific apps ran into the thousands for each app.

The company stated that the problem started in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a section that provides crucial internet framework for a host of companies, who utilize space on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest online services service.

Just after late night (PDT) in the America (8am BST), officials reported “elevated problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the America. The cascading impact seemed to hit apps around the world, with the problem monitoring service reporting problems with the same sites in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on web disruptions, further indicated a rise in problems on that morning, including several cases situated in Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the issues started.
