New Zealand's Joseph Parker Confronts Imminent Suspension Following Positive Drugs Test

The New Zealand heavyweight produced a positive sample in a drugs test conducted on the day he fought in 11th-round loss to English fighter Fabio Wardley.

The Bout and Its Stakes

Fabio Wardley and Parker participated in a pulsating contest in London last October to decide who would become next in line for the WBO against reigning heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.

Parker was previously the leading contender to meet Oleksandr Usyk after putting together a notable six wins in a row, yet put his shot at the title at stake during the bout and suffered an 11th-round defeat.

Failed Examination and Possible Outcomes

A routine test conducted on the boxer via the anti-doping organization on the day of the bout showed an adverse result and now leaves the 36-year-old in a difficult position to clear his name.

His promotion team published an announcement which read: "Vada alerted everyone involved about Parker had a positive result after an anti-doping test administered on the 25th October. As the investigation continues, no further statements are forthcoming at this time."

Boxing Journey

The New Zealand boxer earned the title of titleholder back in 2016 until he was defeated for the WBO title by unanimous decision against British star Joshua in Wales 24 months later.

The fighter remained a regular competitor across the United Kingdom since then, fighting eight times altogether in the UK and relocating to the Irish capital for training camps alongside highly regarded trainer former champion Lee during this period.

Current Situation

Under the tutelage of Lee, Parker bounced back from the 2022 setback against Joe Joyce to chalk up a string of victories positioning him as the top contender to face Usyk before he was defeated against Wardley.

Following Parker's sample showed an adverse finding when he fought Wardley, reportedly involving cocaine, an investigation into the findings has been started.

  • Parker returned an adverse finding for a prohibited substance.
  • The test was administered through Vada on October 25th.
  • Joseph Parker could receive disciplinary action from competition.
  • Queensberry released a comment acknowledging the failed examination.
  • A review is now ongoing about the situation.
