France's Premier Quits After Less Than a Month Amid Extensive Criticism of New Ministers

The French political turmoil has intensified after the recently appointed premier suddenly stepped down within hours of appointing a cabinet.

Swift Exit Amid Government Instability

The prime minister was the third French prime minister in a single year, as the nation continued to stumble from one parliamentary instability to another. He quit moments before his first cabinet meeting on the start of the week. France's leader approved his resignation on Monday morning.

Strong Opposition Regarding Fresh Cabinet

Lecornu had faced furious criticism from opposition politicians when he presented a new government that was mostly identical since last recent removal of his preceding leader, the previous prime minister.

The proposed new government was controlled by President Emmanuel Macron's supporters, leaving the administration almost unchanged.

Political Response

Rival groups said the prime minister had backtracked on the "significant change" with past politics that he had vowed when he assumed office from the unfavored former PM, who was removed on 9 September over a proposed budget squeeze.

Next Government Direction

The question now is whether the national leader will decide to dissolve parliament and call another early vote.

Marine Le Pen's political ally, the head of Marine Le Pen's opposition group, said: "We cannot achieve a reestablishment of order without a fresh vote and the parliament's termination."

He continued, "Evidently Emmanuel Macron who decided this administration himself. He has failed to comprehend of the political situation we are in."

Election Calls

The opposition movement has pushed for another vote, believing they can increase their representation and presence in the assembly.

The nation has gone through a period of turmoil and parliamentary deadlock since the centrist Macron called an indecisive sudden poll last year. The assembly remains divided between the three blocs: the liberal wing, the far right and the centre, with no clear majority.

Financial Deadline

A spending package for next year must be approved within weeks, even though parliamentary groups are at loggerheads and Lecornu's tenure ended in less than a month.

Opposition Vote

Factions from the progressive side to conservative wing were to hold gatherings on Monday to decide whether or not to support to dismiss Lecornu in a no-confidence vote, and it looked that the administration would collapse before it had even started work. Lecornu apparently decided to resign before he could be dismissed.

Ministerial Positions

Most of the major ministerial positions revealed on the night before remained the unchanged, including Gérald Darmanin as justice minister and Rachida Dati as culture minister.

The responsibility of economic policy head, which is vital as a fragmented legislature struggles to approve a financial plan, went to Roland Lescure, a government partner who had previously served as economic sector leader at the start of Macron's second term.

Unexpected Selection

In a unexpected decision, Bruno Le Maire, a presidential supporter who had acted as financial affairs leader for seven years of his leadership, was reappointed to cabinet as military affairs head. This enraged leaders across the various parties, who considered it a indication that there would be no doubt or alteration of Macron's pro-business stance.
