Previous Encounters
The sole past encounter involving Newcastle and Marseille was the Europa League semifinal of 2003-04, claimed by an rising superstar from Ivory Coast. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a peedie bit of history.
Initial Game Reports
Only a single goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Samuel Dahl's sixth-minute goal has earned Benfica under Mourinho a one-nil advantage away to Ajax.
Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille
Even though Newcastle arrived in the French south coming off their restorative 2-1 home Premier League victory over Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Bilbao in the Champions League, their sole away victory since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.
Not that Eddie Howe was eager to talk about the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to domestic games,” said the coach, whose side are sixth in the European table, with 9 pts from a possible 12 and direct qualification to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”
A dedicated live feed is available for Chelsea v Barcelona. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
